Early Life and Education

Yvette Cooper was born on March 20, 1969, in Glasgow, Scotland. She earned a degree in economics from Oxford University and subsequently worked as a financial analyst.

Political Career

Cooper entered politics in 1997 when she was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Normanton, Pontefract, and Castleford. She served as a junior minister in the Labour government of Gordon Brown and later as Chief Secretary to the Treasury. In July 2024, Cooper was appointed Home Secretary.

Marriage to Ed Balls

Yvette Cooper is married to Ed Balls, a former Labour politician and Shadow Chancellor. They met in 1994 and were married in 1998. Balls retired from politics in 2015.
