Massive Boulder Fell On 5 Freeway Moments After 52 Quake Stopped Lanes Through Grapevine

Massive boulder blocks I-5 in Grapevine, causing major delays

All southbound lanes affected; crews working to clear roadway

Commuters advised to seek alternate routes

Several lanes of the 5 Freeway through the Grapevine area were closed for hours Tuesday night after a large boulder fell onto the roadway, blocking traffic.

The California Highway Patrol said the boulder fell around 10 p.m. just south of the Frazier Park exit. All southbound lanes were closed as crews worked to clear the roadway.

The CHP said it was unclear when the lanes would be reopened. Commuters were advised to seek alternate routes.

The boulder fall comes just days after a series of earthquakes shook the region. A preliminary magnitude 5.2 earthquake registered in Northern California Friday morning, and a 5.2 quake struck near Ridgecrest on Tuesday afternoon.

It is unclear if the earthquakes caused the boulder to fall. The CHP said it is investigating the incident.
