Tokyo, Japan - A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 has struck central Japan, triggering widespread damage and tsunami warnings for the west coast. The epicenter of the quake was located off the coast of Fukushima prefecture, about 200 kilometers (120 miles) north of Tokyo. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued tsunami warnings for the prefectures of Fukushima, Miyagi, and Ibaraki, with waves of up to three meters (10 feet) expected.
The earthquake has caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure in the affected areas. Homes have collapsed, roads have been cracked, and power lines have been downed. According to the JMA, at least one person has been killed, with reports of injuries still coming in. Thousands of people have been evacuated to designated shelters as the tsunami approaches coastal areas.
The JMA has urged residents in the affected areas to evacuate immediately to higher ground and to stay away from the coast. The government has also deployed emergency response teams to the affected areas to assist with search and rescue operations.
