Tokyo Disney Resort Shuts Down After Powerful Quake

January 1, 2023

TOKYO, Japan - A powerful earthquake struck central Japan on Monday, January 1st, causing significant damage and injuries. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.6, was felt as far away as Tokyo, where it caused minor damage and disruptions at Tokyo Disney Resort.

According to Tokyo Disney Resort officials, the earthquake occurred at approximately 11:30 AM local time. Guests and staff were immediately evacuated from both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, and the parks were closed for the remainder of the day.

There were no reports of any major injuries at Tokyo Disney Resort, but some guests and staff were treated for minor injuries. One of the most heartwarming stories from the day came from a Disneyland cast member who stayed in character as Eeyore despite the terrifying situation.

The cast member, who has not been identified, was working in the "Meet Mickey Mouse" attraction when the earthquake struck. Despite the chaos and fear around him, the cast member remained in character, providing comfort and reassurance to guests, especially children.

Tokyo Disney Resort officials said they are currently assessing the damage to the parks and will provide an update on when they will reopen as soon as possible.
