Tsunami Warnings Lifted for Okinawa After 7.7 Earthquake
Revised Magnitude and Evacuation Advisories
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has now revised the magnitude of the earthquake that struck off the coast of Okinawa on Wednesday morning from 7.5 to 7.7. The agency had earlier issued a tsunami warning for the region, indicating that waves of up to 3 meters were possible.
Tsunami Advisories Lifted
However, the JMA has since lifted all tsunami advisories for the affected islands. Residents of Okinawa, Miyakojima, and Yaeyama, who had been urged to evacuate, can now return to their homes.
Earthquake Details
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 30 kilometers in the ocean near Taiwan. It generated a 30-centimeter tsunami that reached Yonaguni Island, but no significant damage or injuries have been reported.
Aftershocks and Monitoring
The JMA is continuing to monitor the situation and has issued an advisory for possible aftershocks. Residents in affected areas are advised to take precautions and remain prepared for further updates from the agency.
